Giannis Antetokounmpo named 2019-20 NBA Defensive Player of the Year

The debate between who will win this season’s NBA Defensive Player of the Year (D.P.O.Y.) award is now over.

Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks has won the first D.P.O.Y award of his career in what has been a record-breaking season for him, arguably even better than his MVP-winning season last year. Antetokounmpo, who in many eyes is the presumptive MVP for the second time in a row, is looking to lead his Bucks to a championship in the NBA Bubble, competing against the likes of the Lakers, Clippers, Raptors, and Celtics for this year’s NBA title.

Antetokounmpo’s D.P.O.Y.-winning stats include averaging a block and steal each per game. His defensive efforts led the Bucks to having the top defensive rating (103.36) in the league. Antetokounmpo’s Player Efficiency Rating (PER) of 31.94, which sums up all of his statistical performances into one number, is not only the best in the NBA, but the highest in NBA history. Not only is he an MVP winner, but he’s a four-time All-Star, a three-time All-NBA Team selection, and the 2017 Most Improved Player.

The other candidates for the D.P.O.Y. award include Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers and two-time award winner Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz.

Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are looking to close out their First Round series against the Orlando Magic. They currently lead 3-1 and will play Game 5 tomorrow at 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
